Economics and Management of Construction


Department of Economics and Management of Construction (DEMC) was founded in 1953. The first head of the department was assoc. prof. Gancho Radev, who held that position from 1953 until 1956. The following heads were assoc. prof. Nedyu Karabashov (1956 – 1966), prof. Stanislav Hadzhiev, PhD (1966 – 1975), prof. Georgi Dimitrov, PhD (1975 – 1992), assoc. prof. Geno Genov, PhD (1992 – 2000, 2003 – 2005), assoc. prof. Ivan Zhelev, PhD. (2000 – 2003), and since 2005 – prof. Plamen Iliev, PhD.

In 2015 the academic staff of DEMC includes 15 lecturers with educational and scientific degree “Doctor”. In the department there are 4 professors and 4 assoc. professors.

DEMC administrates and successfully leads the training in programs Construction Economics, Real Estate Economics, Business Economics, Construction Business and Entrepreneurship, and Real Estate and Investments.

The program Construction Economics was founded in 1949, and the first class of students graduated in 1951. In 1953, 28 part-time students were enrolled in the program Construction Economics, which set the start of part-time form of education in the university. The training in the program Real Estate Economics started in the academic year 2005-2006 with one study group, and the program Business Economics started in the academic year 2007/2008, also with one group of students. Due to increased interest in majors Real Estates Economics and Business Economics in the coming years the number of study groups raised. The programs Construction Economics and Business Economics have been renamed, and from the academic year 2015/2016 students apply for the programs Construction Business and Entrepreneurship and Real Estate and Investments.

In full-time and part-time form of education in the programs Construction Economics, Real Estates Economics, and Business Economics have graduated over 7000 bachelors and masters. The academic staff has provided scientific guidance of 42 PhD students. Graduates of the department work in construction companies, real estate agencies, consulting firms, auditing firms, investment companies, banks, insurance companies, pension funds, state, municipal and judicial administrations, and etc.

Research is a main focus in the work of academic staff of the department. In the 60-year history of the department, lecturers have created significant amount of diverse scientific production, encompassing more than 1200 titles in the spheres of economics and management of construction, real estate, investment process, territorial planning, and etc. An important place in scientific activities of DEMC has annually conducted scientific-practical conference on issues in economics and management of construction and real estate.

With its research academic staff of the department contributes for the development of economic science and practice. A lot of lecturers of the department are attracted as consultants in central institutions, construction and other companies, and as lectors in specialized seminars. They occupy responsible administrative and public positions. In order to increase the quality of education, successful realization and career development of graduates of DEMC, the department maintains direct contacts with ministries, public administration, non-profit organizations, construction companies, real estate agencies, as well as with academic staff of other universities in Bulgaria and abroad.

With the training in Construction Economics, Real Estate Economics, Business Economics, Construction Business and Entrepreneurship, and Real Estate and Investments, DEMC aims to prepare specialists, who are familiar with national and international business practices, laws of economic development, organization, management, financing, auditing and analysis of economic activity. By building continues improvements of teaching and research, the academic staff of the department is ready to react to new challenges in the contexts of united Europe.
